JYJ member Kim Junsu’s role ‘Death’ in
the musical is in the center of attention. In ‘Elisabeth’, his role is a
transcendent character that follows Elisabeth around and seduces her
with the desired freedom which only he can give to her.
In fact, the special characteristic of the role Tod is in the
combination of songs and choreography rather than his lines in the
musical. Therefore, if Kim Junsu’s acting in the role ‘Tod’ was set
aside, the musical could be mistaken as a small unique musical concert.
From a soft ballad or a thrilling dance song to a sweet yet sorrowful
duet, the songs flowing through his lips in each scene are painted with
various colours. Even the sound of his breath seems like a poem being
recited, one moment he came closer and whispered the murmurs of sweet
love; the next moment he shouted and burst out like fireworks, showing
the Black Devil’s allure. With a sexy and detailed choreography added
up, his stage was sublimated into a supreme performance.
‘The last dance’ is the highlight of the show where the audience can
feel Kim Junsu’s full energy. There is no need to include any further
explanation; this scene is enough to explain why he was casted by the
producers and why his ability was acknowledged by some of the greatest
artists in the world like Robert Johanson or Sylvester Levay.
The superb scene which can only be seen in the combination of Kim
Junsu’s ‘Tod’ and the ensemble ‘Angels of the Death’ stands out from the
rest. It was a moment where not only Elisabeth but everyone in the
audience fell for the allure of ‘Death’. The addictive melody and a
strong performance which no one can take their eyes off for just a
single moment have lifted the climax of his devotion and perfection
higher.
The overwhelming ovation when Kim Junsu appears at the curtain call
reminds of an actual concert. Getting up out of the seat, everyone in
the audience clapped their hands while singing along or swaying their
shoulders to the rhythm, and enhanced the sound intensity of the concert
hall to the maximum.
After enjoying fully the climax of the show, even when the light in
the hall was on, the audiences still haven’t realized that they have get
up out of their seats for a good while. The excitement of the audience
couldn’t fade away at all. That is the power to portray ‘Tod’ from a
different dimension of the musical genius Kim Junsu.
